THE MIDNIGHT – Horror Show (2021)
Californian ’80s retro wonders THE MIDNIGHT are back in action with “Horror Show“, quite a dark departure from their previous releases. This is still plenty of melody with soaring vocals, but this time the music features elements of Eighties screamer slasher flicks.
Think the soundtracks from ‘Friday The 13th’, ‘Halloween’, ‘Manhunter’, etc, and add to that pop sensibility, smooth vocals and killer electric guitar solos.
Believe me, with this album The Midnight will take you back to your teen or kid years, when going to the movies was a fest.
“Horror Show” is a lightly departure from The Midnight’s regular sound, showing that the band is always willing to test out new, murky waters – a hallmark of good artistry.
“Neon Medusa” is filled with references to French touch, featuring some awesome Justice-style synth leads. The lyrics are also notably darker, taking The Midnight into territory truly after dark!
“Don’t fall in love with the man on stage / I’ll be on in a minute, I’m just sharpening my blade…”
By the way, the guitar solo is heavier than on many your favorite recent melodic hard rock albums. A very good.
“Ghost in Your Stereo” not only sports a great title, musically is pretty awesome too, making me think of ‘Manhunter’ 1985 movie soundtrack (the prequel to ‘The Silence Of the Lambs’ smash hit film)
More in a traditional The Midnight sound is ‘Devil Make a Deal’ (but with really dark lyrics), same as the wonderful melody of ‘Because The Night’.
”Horror Show” is the best release from this band since ‘Endless Summer’ and that is no disrespect to their other tremendous releases. The horror theme, sounds and samples is a good sound for The Midnight. Each song is just a masterpiece and it shows why The Midnight deserves the following they have.
”Horror Show” shows that 2020 can offer surprises that are good for once and it is a fantastic listen from start to finish.
This is pure ’80s stuff. And we love it.

Great post. Very removed from your usual genre(s) but a brilliant band nevertheless and one which I love. Wrapped within their 80s sound appears the occasional wonder guitar solo. Was put onto these guys by a good friend of mine who is a guitar wizard and plays in a rock band but yet still hears the rock connection to this retro-sounding modern release.
Can’t recommend these guys enough. In many of their albums you gotta pick and choose the tracks to find the gems but make no mistake, they’re in there!
… and a commendable, modernised cover of a Patti Smyth classic in there too. Nice!
