Now this is a very special release; “Bloodlust”, the new album by MARITA, aka the ‘wild cat’, bass player for Norwegian rockers Grimskull. But here Marita handles the lead vocals, and I said special because “Bloodlust” is a total homage to the ’80, but also ’80s horror movies / soundtracks.

Norwegian Marita born in 1989 – what a year for melodic hard rock / AOR – but that doesn’t keep off her to discover Eighties greats and spending her teenage years listining to Dio, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, etc. She was destined to dedicated her life to this genre.
And of course, Marita become fan of ’80s slash-movies, and the soundtracks.

For “Bloodlust” all started with an idea about wanting to do a theme album, and since cool ’80s horror and thriller movies have been a big part of Marita’s life, throwing in some classic horror and a bunch of vampires, it felt right to dedicate it to all things creepy cool.
Helped by musician Trygve Johan Solheim who also produces, the aim was to bring back the ’80s, and they stick to the booming sound of that decade, adding feel-good riffs and rhythm to the album as well.

The movies that inspired this album the most were The Lost Boys, Dracula, Trick Or Treat, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, everything badass Charles Bronson (especially the movie 10 To Midnight which they named a song after), and Fright Night.
The song “Flesh is Burning” was inspired by Daphne Moon in Frasier going “Flesh is burning, na-na-na-na-na-na”, which was too comical to pass up.
Marita confess being very inspired by Juliee Cruise from Twin Peak’s soundtrack, and some Ozzy when singing.

The overall sound on the album was inspired by Alice Cooper’s song “He’s Back – The Man Behind the Mask’ (Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives soundtrack), and 80s movie music / soundtracks in general.
Songs like ‘Horror High’, ‘Seek The Fortune’, or ‘Sleep Among The Dead’ include that ‘creepy’ synth  sounds so ’80s all over – ‘Flesh Is Burning’ climate is great – and Marita’s vocals recall Cindy Cruise, at places intentionally childish to increase the horror even more.

’80s movies / soundtrack suckers are on a treat with Marita’s “Bloodlust”. Seriously, it sounds like a lost OST from 1986, and the songs are very well composed / arranged replicating the atmosphere of the era.
Love this kinda of stuff.
