ADRENALINE RUSH – Soul Survivor (2017)
Following the successful release of the band’s self-titled debut album, Swedes ADRENALINE RUSH are ready to unleash their next album “Soul Survivor” tomorrow, via Frontiers Music.
This time, blond bombshell vocalist Tåve Wanning mainly collaborated with Fredrik Folkare (Firespawn, Unleashed), who brought fresh influences to the table that fit very well with Tåve’s ideas. The music has evolved and grown beyond what appeared on the debut.
“Soul Survivor” is still melodic and definitely has an ’80s flavor, but also is a bit more complex, darker, and heavier than the previous album. The production is edgier and the guitar work once again pristine.
Erik Martensson (Eclipse) is again involved as a sounding board, co-writing a song and mastering the finished tracks. Yeah, in many ways, think about “Soul Survivor” as Eclipse with female vocals.
Tåve Wanning remains on the path to becoming this generation’s hard rock / metal goddess, the heir apparent to Lita Ford and Doro Pesch. Those are some large stiletto high heels to fill.
But Ms Wanning ain’t that little girl from the Swedish pop duo Peaches anymore. Nope. She’s a full blown hotty and heartbreaker, ballbuster and maneater. Why do you think she graces the cover of her second album, Soul Survivor?
The new album comes with some personnel changes, with Joel Fox and Sam Soderlindh, jumping in on bass and lead guitar, respectively.
The album kicks off with the high octane track “Adrenaline”, before moving on to the first single “Love Is Like Poison”. This is certainly a very good song, but I think there are actually much better songs on the album.
My favorites are “Breaking The Chains”, driven by a catchy rhythm and an anthemic chorus and I can imagine it getting my fist pumping at a concert, along with the infectious “Stand My Ground”.
Other stand out tracks here include the sharp “Wild Side”, and another personal favourite in “Don’t Wake Me Up”, which features some of Tave Wanning’s best vocals on the album along with some stupendous guitar riffs.
Title track “Soul Survivor” is really good too, more midtempo with a groovy hard rock feel, flatter riffage blended with a piano and synth layer, and a chilling guitar solo.
In “Soul Survivor” we see Adrenaline Rush going edgy, with a more modern sound in comparison to their debut, still with that ’80s catchines at the core of their sound.
You can hear Erik Mårtensson’s touch oin the fast and slick guitars, and while not really a heavy album, the edge is present throughout. Tåve Wanning has incredibly grown as vocalist, more confident and developing a unique style that puts her among the best hard rock / metal ladies from the new generation.
