BEVERLY KILLZ – Kingdom [reissue 2020] *EXCLUSIVE*
Italian melodic hard rockers BEVERLY KILLZ are about to release a new album next month, meanwhile the band is reissuing 2020 their back catalog, including this recording titled “Kingdom”.
Despite the band’s name, Beverly Killz does not play sleaze, these guys showcase here their love for late ’80s / earlier ’90s American Hard Rock with a touch of Hair Metal.
“Kingdom” is rawer than Beverly Killz previous album, recorded by themselves almost live into the studio, and originally available for free for the fans at their website.
The album starts with “Second Home”, a feisty and raw hard rocker, corresponding with straight-in-your-face style Beverly Killz were eager to utilize at the very beginning of their career.
However, on their first EP there were no tracks such as “Blue Nights,” an elaborate final piece of the album with its jazzy flavor, instrumental richness and boogie piano charm.
“Your World,” is aparty-ready mixture of Hard Rock and ’87 Glam Metal that doesn’t fall far from Beverly Killz’ record ‘Gasoline & Broken Hearts’. From dynamic lead guitar work to trademark background gang vocals and simple-but-catchy chorus, the band’s music still reflects the distinct ‘80s Rock influence seasoned with a tint of Punk-ish roughness.
With its tell-all pun-laden title, “My Kingdom For A Whore” rocks in a similar manner, albeit with a bit more aggressive and darker vibe to it which perfectly completes the sardonic lyrical nature of the piece.
“Crazy Little Girl” is as sarcastic as the former – a tongue-in-cheek heartbreak song – its melody being in half a neat pastiche of sentimental Pop Metal / power ballad, in half a typical Killz’ track.
Even more of a twist is given to “Shock To The System” as the track draws from Blues aesthetics rather than Glam with its complex arrangement and melody line. “My Way Or The Highway” marks a return to the band’s usual style, yet with interesting changes of pace and surprisingly ballad-ish outro.
“Kingdom” combine the youthful, raw energy of Beverly Killz’ early days with more mature, diversified approach to their sound and style as well as sardonic social commentary. Just take a look at the album cover: it’s a painting by a Polish painter Pawel Kuczynski. Beverly Killz were looking for an idea to represent that kind of dirty, corrupted power and how often people are ready to embrace it.
This album rocks, with attitude.
