LAST LOVER – I’m Alive (2016)
Founded two years ago by experienced musicians Salomax (Vocals, Guitars) and Luca Ducci (Keyboards), LAST LOVER is new melodic hard rock band based in Brazil who are presenting to the world their debut “I’m Alive“.
The guys did the club circuit playing originals alongside classics from Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Gotthard, etc, so this give a pretty good idea what their music is all about.
Gradually, Last Lover’s own penned songs were gaining more space into their show’s setlist, with the band deciding to record the debut album produced by themselves and released via their own label.
“I’m Alive” features ten tracks all highly influenced by the late ’80s / early ’90s American melodic hard rock, and the guys in Last Lover not only are good composing catchy songs in this vein but also performing the tunes with the typical ‘feel’ from that era.
There’s really enjoyable melodies in the likes of ‘Superman’ with a strong Firehouse influence, ‘Maybe Someday’ comes straight from the Bon Jovi/New Jersey book but its more ‘rootsy’ stuff, while ‘How To Fly’ adds some acoustics in the mood of Guns N’ Roses ‘Lies’ album.
The punchy ‘Is Coming’ is one of the strongest cuts on the album with a great vocal work by Salomax and a solid solo.
We have a brooding rocker in ‘Find Out Rock and Roll’ with cool lyrics of what this genre is all about, more Bon Jovi-esque melodies in the sweet midtempo ‘Let Me Live’ (very good pre-chorus / chorus), and fine atmospheres in the track named as the band, ‘Last Lover’.
Title track ‘I’m Alive’ is an organic midtempo with orchestrated synths in the background mixing acoustics / electrics and upfront lead vocals, curiously the more ‘European’ sounding track on the record.
Of course an album of this kind needs a ballad, and ‘He’s Gone’ despite its midtempo nature fits in this category with a bit of a ’90s Danger Danger style.
Silently released with almost zero promotion “I’m Alive” is a more than a solid debut by Last Lover packed with strong songs and effective melodies crafted in the classy style of the melodic hard rock genre.
Salomax lead vocals are potent and accent-free, matched by a fine instrumentation from all involved. Considering it has been handled by themselves, production is really good with a warm separated mix.
Last Lover has the potential to break-in into the international melodic hard rock scene, they have the skills, the chops and the ‘know-how’.
