THE STEVE BONINO PROJECT – Stargazer 1 & 2 (2019)
Involved into many projects like the awesome Bomber Goggles (here) New York native Steve Bonino is a musician to watch. Or better, to listen to. His latest venture is THE STEVE BONINO PROJECT and his double-offer “Stargazer“.
“Stargazer 1” was released at the end of 2018, and now we have “Stargazer 2”. Both were simultaneously recorded, and there’s a lot to enjoy.
“Stargazer” is a concept piece of work, and that’s the name of the hero of the futuristic story presented here in which man’s neglect has made Earth no longer habitable, and people have to leave. the planet.
If you’re not interested in following the story it doesn’t matter, you can enjoy the music, as a most tracks work as standalone songs.
And you can find here some stupendous numbers in a variety of styles all around crossover / progressive rock, ranging from Neo-prog, melodic prog, to power pop and proggy AOR.
The titles are all short, ‘song format’, with only a few over the five-minute mark, and even these are very, very easy listening and entertaining. Many, actually, may find a place in Rock radio.
“Stargazer 1 & 2” are really accessible proggy music, fluid, plenty of melody, layered harmony vocals, and while Steve is a skilled multi-instrumentalist, never overplay.
He has a real knack of composing catchy songs, giving them enough depth so that they have a real presence, but also showing restraint. There is the impression that both ‘Stargazer’ could have been a lot heavier, it wouldn’t have taken much in the mix, but it works great as it is.
