Sweden’s metallers EVERGREY enters an bewildering new chapter in the band’s history with their thirteenth studio album “A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament)”, to be released on May 20, 2022 via Napalm Records. The band’s has added to their progressive heaviness a new factor: a melodic, melancholic touch, almost goth, at places dark beauty.
Whatever you do, don’t listen to ”A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament)” through your phone speaker. Just don’t. It is easily one of the most densely layered affairs of EVERGREY’s career, at once distancing itself from previous CD ‘Rise of The Phoenix’ as being a totally different animal, and the mix alone deserves some really good headphones, earbuds, or external speakers if that’s what you have to do…

After 25 years, EVERGREY should be far better known. Simply put, they are one of the best melodic progressive metal acts out there.
Now the Swedes have returned with “Escape Of The Phoenix“, a set of tunes written and recorded as the world withdrew from normality. Befitting a lyricist as gifted as vocalist Tom Englund, it poses a series of questions, such as what happens when its titular phoenix, an eternal symbol of rebirth, prefers to remain dead?
Evergrey make music that is crisp, accomplished and often polished with a gleaming commercial edge. With luck, maybe Englund’s duet with Dream Theater front man James LaBrie on ‘The Beholder’ will introduce them to a few more newbies.
