Best Melodic Rock album 2016, Silver Medal : ANGELS OR KINGS – Go Ask The Moon! (2016)
Near the end of the year, it’s time to recap about the best 2016 releases, by category.
For 0dayrox, the Silver Medal to the best Melodic Rock album of the year goes to ANGELS OR KINGS “Go Ask The Moon!”.
ANGELS OR KINGS released in 2014 their first album, easily among the best of the year. Now the British melodic rock band are back with second album “Go Ask The Moon!” via AOR Heaven Records.
If ever there was an ’80s British AOR that were criminally ignored by record labels, then A.O.K. fitted that bill perfectly. Founded in Manchester, England in 1988, they were made up of ex members of Sam Thunder, Circus and Strutz to name a few, and tore it up on Oxford Road – Manchester’s answer to Sunset Strip – playing the Banshee and Rockworld and as opener in larger venues for Dare and Danger Danger.
A.O.K. never got a record deal but their lovely demo circulated among fans of the genre as a precious gem. After 30 years of silence this superb band returned 3 years ago screaming for vengeance under the complete name ANGELS OR KINGS with their very good debut CD on AOR Heaven Records, chock full of quality melodic rock .
Angel Or Kings stand out from the crowd due to the vocals of Baz Jackson, how he has not been a more well known vocalist before joining this band is a mystery. His vocals are perfect for this style of polished melodic rock, adding a hard rock edge to ‘Ancient Fires’ or ‘You Better Pray’, then switching to balladeer mode on ‘When The Heart Is Young’.
‘No Alibi’ and the huge ‘The Nights Don’t Count’ are both superb slices of pure melodic hard rock / AOR bliss showing the talent of this band to deliver some unique tunes. Strangeways fans will adore these.
Another key to the band’s success and sound are guitarists Tony Bell & Steve Kenny, who between them serve up a guitar riff and solo feast. They combine tastefully with the keyboards on ‘Waiting For The Thunder’, which will delight fans of this band and ones who enjoy FM / Overland.
Special mention to ‘Heartbreak Railroad Company’ where the band pull out the stops on the musical backing, from the beautiful string arrangement through to the magnificent harmonies on the chorus. Topping it off are the heartfelt vocals of Jackson, quite possibly the best song they have recorded to date.
Angels Or Kings have firmly established themselves as a ‘must listen’ in the melodic rock world. If you enjoyed their debut you will love this “Go Ask The Moon!”, an album you can’t stop playing.
