OUGHTON TANERA – Jasper’s Warning (2016)
“Jasper’s Warning” is the just released new album by OUGHTON TANERA, a three-piece Melodic Rock band heralding from Germany. The project is the brainchild of the multi-talented musician Heiko ‘Oughton’ Arendt who wrote, mixed and produced the whole album; he handled every part in the early stages before passing the drums and percussion to Pedda Wohlgemuth and vocals to Michael Stegh.
There are many musicians out there with great talents, however, what is most remarkable about Oughton is the fact that, in February 2013, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. This left him, at one stage, unable to move his fretting hand and thus he had to develop new techniques in order to be able to play again.
This, in turn, has lead to a beautiful, unique guitar tone that subsequently has given rise to an original Melodic Rock band / album.
Oughton wrote the title track ‘Jasper’s Warning’ after his son came into the rehearsal room with a self made horn. He played the note A 440hz instantly. So they decided to record that instrument and the idea for the album was born.
But “Jasper’s Warning” has a vast variety of themes. Oughton worked together with actors and created an audio drama for the trilogy-track ‘The Inner Peace’, a really interesting piece of work.
On the more commercial side of things, ‘When You Cry’ is a straight ahead melodic hard rocker with some kind of Lynch Mob smell driven by racing guitars, a punchy rhythm section and classy vocals.
There’s more groove on ‘Wrong World’ where lead singer Stegh sounds very like Carsten ‘The Lizzard’ Shulz, as he does on many of the tracks, especially the moody ‘Keep Your Love Alive’ and the heavier ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Night’ plenty of strong harmony vocals.
“Jasper’s Warning” has obviously been a therapeutic exercise for Oughton who has used it to showcase his quite unique songwriting and guitar talents in equal measures.
Oughton Tanera as band sounds truly tight with their interesting approach to elaborated Melodic Rock driven by an original guitar work, really good vocals and a versatile rhythm section.
