MARK KNOPFLER – This Is Not Enough For Me (2017)
“This Is Not Enough For Me” is a just appeared collection of rare and unreleased tracks by British singer-songwriter and guitarist MARK KNOPFLER, I suspect not an official release but a must for Knopfler / Dire Straits fans.
SILVERTOWN BLUES is one of the best songs from Knopfler’s album “Sailing To Philadelphia”, but was never played live. Fans started to press Mark Knopfler through his website and he rehearsed the song once during Munich soundchecks in 2001. They played it just once and Mark decided that will be the last with, the sentence “This Is Not Enough For Me”, hence the title of this compilation.
PORTOBELLO BELLE: Rehearsed during that Munich soundchecks, also by fans petition, never made it into the set and was never played live again.
REAGGE ROMEO: Soudchecks are boring, and sometimes they need some fun. During Bilbao soundchecks they tried Romeo And Juliet, and ended playing an instrumental reagge based on this Dire Straits classic.
PYROMAN: Song recorded for the “Sailing To Philadelphia” record but never released. They played it live in almost every concert of that tour. It remains unreleased.
WAG THE DOG: The title song for the Barry Levinson film was played live only a few times. This is one of them. A PLACE WHERE WE USED TO BE: This song from the “The Ragpickers Dream” record was never played live until Mark Knopfler was asked to do a very intimate charity concert at Boothbay, Maine, US. This was the first and last live version for this song.
WHOOP DE DOO: Also in Boothbay was the first and last time Mark Knopfler played live this song from his “Shangri-La” record.
DEVIL BABY: During the second date of the 2008 tour, Mark Knopfler tried this rare version of “Devil Baby”, recorded for “The Ragpickers Dream” but never played live before. Apparently he wasn’t happy with it as it was never played live again.
BEHIND WITH THE RENT: This song from “Kill To Get Crimson” never was performed live, until Knopfler played a charity concert at London’ Burlingham Club for The Prince’s Trust fundation, and to make it extra rare, the version played was the one prior to the recording, that is very different, and played before the main show with a very small audience of VIP tickets buyers.
REDBUD TREE: The first single from “Priva-tearing” was played live a few times only during the 2012 tour opening for Bob Dylan, and it was never played live again.
OCCUPATION BLUES: One of the bonus tracks available only in the box deluxe edition of “Priva-tearing”, was played during the Chalice Valley History Festival in 2016, in a very special occasion where Mark talked about his songs related to historical facts.
PLAYTIME DELUXE: Mark Knopfler played at the Bill Wymann 80th Anniversary concert in 2016 and decided to bring a gift to this friend, a brand new song that is unreleased and who knows if it will appear in any Knopfler record in the future…
Listed as bonus tracks, there’s some tracks such as TWO SKINNY KIDS. During the “Sailing To Philadelphia” sessions, Knopfler recorded a song about The Every Brothers that was never released but it was played live in a Master Session celebrated in Nashville during the Chet Atkins Musicians Days II.
IT’S BEEN A WHILE: in that Master Sessions, Knopfler played this unreleased song to explain how to write and arrange a song. This is the only existing version of this song.
TERMINAL OF TRIBUTE TO: Another song released only in a Deluxe Edition Box, that was played live just once in a very special production rehearsal before contests winners. There was a lot of security and this song was recorded in a very difficult circunstances. That’s why the sound quality isn’t as good as the previous, but a must for Knopfler fans.
