DAUGHTRY – Cage To Rattle (2018)
Yes, why not, I like DAUGHTRY, and they are about to release their fifth studio album, “Cage To Rattle“, tomorrow July 27. Let’s get right to it: “Cage To Rattle” is so ‘easy listening’ that you could enjoy it with your mum, your gran, and just about anyone else and no one is going to get offended.
And yet, that’s its charm.
“Cage To Rattle” knows it’s not cutting edge, it totally understands that it’s job is to entertain and it performs that role perfectly. Chris Daughtry won American Idol. He knows what he’s doing and he can deliver these songs just fine.
In an overall retrospect, listeners are either going to love the anticipated summer sizzlin’ album, or listeners will have bitter feelings towards the lack of Rock to be “expected.”
However, that’s the unfortunate thing about being in the limelight: listeners will carry expectations, regardless of the consideration of a band’s evolution.
It is hard to believe it has been five years since Chris Daughtry, Josh Steely, Josh Paul, Brian Craddock, Elvio Fernandes, and Brandon Maclin scored four number-one hits, four Grammy nominations, and over eight-million albums sold, Daughtry have faced their challenges and transformed into a light that won’t burn out.
The ten-track playlist opens with “Just Found Heaven,” creating suspense from the beginning with keys, not long before a thumping drum beat carves a steady groove for a Pop-Rock anthem.
Daughtry digs into the roots of their souls with the danceable “Backbone.” In contrast, “Death of Me” displays the inner-battle one could have when she/he is trying not to give up. The vocals are near isolated throughout the first verse, while keys grab the listener’s attention and mild guitar plucks linger beneath the choir-like synths.
“Bad Habits” and “Stuff of Legends” are honorable mentions, growing heavier as the album comes to a close, especially the latter which boasts a no fooling riff, some lead guitar and struts its funky stuff with some aplomb.
Holding the thick and gritty atmosphere found in the debut album Daughtry, closing number “White Flag” is the most climactic track on the CD. Warming keys invite the listener to an anthem of never giving up or going out by choice. Daughtry holds onto their pride as the song comparatively explodes, unlike the rest of the album where most tracks hold a complacent level.
Daughtry have sold eight million records. Most of those sales have been in America.
The North Carolina band are just about the most American-sounding band in history, so that’s fair enough, but there is a sense that with “Cage To Rattle” they are looking at the planet and thinking: yeah that’d be nice.
