KORITNI – Rolling (2018)
Formed in twelve years ago by Australian singer / songwriter Lex Koritni, since then KORITNI has been ascending through the ranks of the international melodic hard rock scene with an ever-increasing fan base. Koritni already have four studio albums under their belt, has played with Scorpions, Mr. Big, Jimmy Barnes, etc, and now are presenting “Rolling”, their new CD, as usual produced by Lex Koritni.
As happened with the last Koritni records, behind the mixing console there’s legendary Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Europe, Rush), and again the mastering was done at at Sterling Sound NY by engineer Ryan Smith (AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses) who took care of all Koritni releases.
So expect solid production / mix, as the team has been together for many years and know each other very well.
“Rolling” should be the band’s best album, not only the group feels tight but also songwriting has been refined and focused. This new album is quite classic rock oriented, still melodic hard rocking, yet more organic and mature.
The style and sound which comes to mind is in the Inglorious / The Dead Daisies vein, with a strong British scent.
Lex is a complete singer with a flexible register, always in control and harmonic with a timbre that reminds me Gary Cherone (Extreme). In fact, many tracks on this album bring to mind Cherone’s side band Hurtsmile.
One of the highlights of this band is the formidable rhythm section, specially Chris Brown’s excellent drumming which together the fat groove of Dean Hunter’s bass provides a mammoth foundation for the biting guitars.
We find as guests John Coghlan (Status Quo), the great Pat McManus, and more.
The rock credentials are high on the opening track ‘Life Away’, a punchy song shouting to be played live. The catchy ‘Back for More’ is one of my favorites here, while ‘Save My Soul’ adds a bluesy touch with a classic rock riffage ala Rival Sons.
The acoustic guitars are also put to good use throughout the album, especially on ‘Looking so Fine’ where the band sound like Extreme, and the dynamic ‘Run Outta Gas’ both of which also feature excellent vocals from Koritni.
I’m sure “Rolling” will bring new listeners to the Koritni camp; to their traditional melodious hard rock, Lex and the guys have added a classic feel to these rockers turning this new album much more warm with a wider potential appeal. To a great extent, this result also must be credited to the first rate mix & engineering.
