ANGEL CITY (aka The Angels) – Face To Face [Rock Candy remaster]
This is a Rock Candy remaster released some time ago (and featured here on the blog) but seems it has become pretty scarce now and many have requested a revamp of it; ANGEL CITY‘s “Face To Face“.
Known as simply ‘The Angels’ in their homeland of Australia, ANGEL CITY made a worldwide splash in the early ’80s and still can be found jamming in Down Under today.
It was AC/DC’s Bon Scott who took the Angel City under his wing and got them their first record contract. The band released two albums in their native land before signing worldwide to Epic Records in 1980.
“Face To Face” took the best songs off of both Aussie-only releases plus “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again” (the re-recorded version that appeared on the Out Of The Blue E.P.) and make one hell of a Rock ‘N Roll record here.
Sure, the music is brittle and deeply indebted to earlier AC/DC’s uncompromising raucous boogie but the twist in the tale is the band’s lyrical component.
Frontman Doc Neeson’s hypnotic story telling formed the backbone of a style that caught the imagination and propelled them to success on stages from London to Los Angeles.
We have some really kickin’ rockers like “Take A Long Line,” “Shadow Boxer,” the electrifying “Can’t Shake It”, a fun number on “After the Rain,” and my favorite, “No Exit”.
Angel City’s “Face To Face” fit in nicely in your collection alongside with AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and Cold Chisel, just to name Australian bands doing this hard rocking style. Just great foot stompin’, old fashioned classic rock and roll. Few years ago, “Face To Face” was listed in the book ‘100 Best Australian Albums of All Time’.
This Rock Candy 24-bit remastering from original source tapes is really good, with a vinyl LP warmness.
If you remember or have the LP then pick this puppy up as you will love hearing these songs again with a fantastic sound. If you have never heard of them, then discover a great classic rock band from yesteryear.
Either way, Angel City is a kick ass rock band that deserves another look.
“Face To Face” is, indeed, Rock ‘N Roll in its purest form.
