SQUARES (JOE SATRIANI) – Best of the Early ’80s (2019) *EXCLUSIVE*

JOE SATRIANI has had a long and acclaimed solo career, his awards and accolades from fans and the industry alike are unending. Yet, through all of that, Satriani has often mentioned in interviews the musical trio that launched the next step in his musical career, his first band, the SQUARES. The just released “Best of the Early ’80s” features for the first time the recordings of the inception of the legendary SATRIANI sound.

As Satriani explains, “We were part Van Halen and part Everly Brothers. A mix of heavy metal, rock ‘n’ roll, power pop and new wave. We were hard to pin down and categorize, which is most likely why we never ‘made it’!”
However, Satriani never lost his love for that time or that music.

“But as we were trying our best to get a record deal and become superstars we had a lot of good times, and we laid down some seriously good music. We were ahead of our time, which, in this case, is another way of saying we were out of step with what people were looking for back then.”
“Ultimately, I left the band I started to pursue a solo career,” Satriani continued. “It was gut wrenching to walk away from something I put all my heart and soul into, but, as it turned out it was the right thing to do.”

What remains today are the original, early ’80s professional demos recorded and mixed by the band’s then live sound engineer John Cuniberti. They have restored the original recordings, brought them into the digital world, and with loving hands and ears, John has remixed the best of what the band created in studio.
According to Satriani, “They sound better than ever. John was careful to preserve the band’s original intent with regards to song arrangements, sound and vibe, and in some cases, extremely creative mix ideas.”

Musically this is a mix or rocking songs with power pop melodies, there’s some new wave influences as well, with sounds coming from such different acts like Van Halen, The Police, Rick Springfield, The Cars, even Styx.
The remaining members in Squares are talented too – in fact drummer Jeff Campitelli recorded in Joe’s early solo albums – and Andy Milton (bass, vocals) proves to be a solid singer and songwriter.

Back in 1987, Joe Satriani released his second album, ‘Surfing With The Alien’, making him something of an instant guitar icon. With tracks like ‘Satch Boogie’ and ‘Always With Me, Always With You’, fans undoubtedly wondered where this phenomenal guitarist came from.
While the songs in Square’s “Best of the Early ’80s” are indeed a little bit removed from what music-lovers might expect from Joe Satriani, the material is very solid and enjoyable, and undoubtedly an intriguing look into the early days of one of music’s guitar icons.
