Do you remember when albums like TNT’s “Intuition” and “Tell No Tales” were regularly played on your stereo? The Norwegian band worked themselves into a musical niche presenting the virtuoso guitar approach from Ronni LeTekro and the soaring vocals of the US singer Tony Harnell as trademarks of a unique Melodic Hard Rock sound. There is no denying that since the early 90’s the story of TNT has gone into a rollercoaster of highs and downs and the recent end of the relationship between Harnell and LeTekro in TNT, unfortunately seems to have put an end to their collaboration and to the band’s timeless signature sound.

Lovekillers however marks Tony Harnell’s return to the soaring vocals and Melodic Hard Rock sound of the 80s TNT albums. It is an over-the-top and straight ahead way to embrace the classic 80s sound and bring it back with passion and the amazing vocal register that only Harnell can deliver.
The resulting album Lovekillers is a glossy, polished record with a hint of the regal. Written by Harnell together with Alessandro Del Vecchio together with other skilled writers like Nigel Bailey, Pete Alpenborg, Marco Sivo, Jonas Hornqvist and produced by Del Vecchio, melodic rock won’t get any better than this this year.

Little needs to be said about Harnell’s exceptional voice and vocal style. He simply sings clean, melodic, and strong with no stress or strain in his range.
With Lovekillers, Harnell adds his voice to his most familiar musical context, AOR / melodic hard rock. I would also describe the music as very guitar-forward as the talented axeman Gianluca Ferro (24 Strings, et al) lays down some amazing guitar solos.

To briefly mention a few songs, you’ll hear some lively and strong melodic hard rock with ‘Alive Again’, ‘Now Or Never’ and ‘Higher Again’. Then ‘No More Love’ attempts to throw you a curve ball by beginning with Harnell over piano and synths, suggesting a ballad, but the song quickly rises to some fast paced hard rocker with strong riffs and drums. To hear the strength of Ferro’s guitar work , I could point to any song, yet ‘Ball And Chain’, ‘No More Love’, and ‘Alive Again’ were most impressive.

Anthemic AOR tunes arrive with ‘Across The Oceans’ and ‘Bring Me Back’ recalling Hanell glory days with TNT.
With ‘Set Me Free’ things settle down for a softer, yet rising, rock ballad featuring Harnell over Del Vecchio’s piano.
The acoustic version of ‘Bring Me Back’ – the Japanese bonus track – brings new life to the song’s melody, more sweet adn intimate.

I am very, very happy: one of the greatest ’80s melodic hard rock voices is back and doing what all we were waiting for: melodious rocking tunes with nerve and AOR ditties to enjoy all day.
Lovekillers sounds great as a unit, but the star here are Tony Harnell’s vocals, powerful, clear and exceptional.
