JOURNEY – The Way We Used To Be EP (2022) HQ
This past February, founding JOURNEY guitarist Neal Schon shared the definitive track list of “Freedom”, the upcoming new album (July) from the band in more than a decade.
Following the band’s acrimonious split with drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory back in 2020, the current line up of the band includes Schon, Jonathan Cain, Arnel Pineda, and new recruits legendary drummer / producer Narada Michael Walden, keyboardist/backing singer Jason Derlatka, and also legendary bassist Randy Jackson.
“Freedom” will include the song “The Way We Used To Be“, the multi-platinum band’s first new music since 2011’s album Eclipse, and the first track released by the band’s revamped lineup. “The Way We Used To Be” marked Walden and Derlatka’s first studio recordings with the band, and Jackson’s first since 1986’s “Raised On Radio”.
Meanwhile, other songs from the album surfaced…
Released few days ago as single, “Don’t Give Up on Us” is just another great track form the new album, a tune reminiscent of their 1981-1983 era.
For longtime fans of the band, “You Got the Best of Me” should feel like a natural addition to the catalog. Opening with Jonathan Cain’s synthy keyboards, the track is eventually fleshed out with a catchy drum beat from Narada Michael Walden and some meaty guitar work from Neal Schon, all accentuated by Arnel Pineda’s soaring vocal leading to a triumphant and uplifting Journey song. The track also includes bass work from Randy Jackson holding things down, while Cain’s piano pieces standout as the song kicks in.
“Let It Rain” is the third song unveiled from ”Freedom”, a guitar driven rocker. Stylistically, the songs released thus far have been noticeably different, which aligns with what keyboardist Jonathan Cain said about the new album: “We have all the elements. Some of it’s really raw and really rock ‘n’ roll, and I think we have the classic ballads. We really tried to stay true to what we do best, and that’s just write good songs.”
Journey music is timeless, and their signature song ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’ will be featured on the soundtrack of the fourth season of TV series ‘Stranger Things’, but the classic track sound a bit different… very different indeed.
To match the vibe of the horror show, the track got the remix treatment, resulting in a creepy version and it’ll likely send a chill up your spine.

Thanks for this. The lastest is that even though Narada Michael Walden and Randy Jackson are on the new LP, neither is in Journey now.
