MOTHER’S FINEST – Iron Age [Rock Candy remastered & reloaded]
Requested by many, here’s the reissue of MOTHER’S FINEST perhaps most famous (and best) album “Iron Age“, remastered & reloaded by Rock Candy Records specialists. Arguably, Mother’s Finest were one of the greatest funk rock bands of all time. However for this album Mother’s Finest style go for early ’80s Hard Rock; just check out the song titles and choosing as producer an expert for the genre; Jeff Glixman (Kiss, Gary Moore, Saxon).
Formed in the early Seventies Mother’s Finest entered the scene as a full-on rock band, but with a unique sound that fused lean and mean bad ass funk with crunchy guitar driven white boy rock. Their debut album took the music world by the short and curlies, attracting praise from fans of both funk and traditional rock.
They were equally at home being compared to Funkadelic as they were to Led Zeppelin.
It was this unique musical mash-up that not only attracted praise but also caused a degree of confusion. Many critics, journalists and radio jocks couldn’t quite place them into a specific bag; a problem that restricted their commercial progress, despite crafting some of the most exciting music of the era.
This confusion also influenced the band’s sound which had, on occasion, been wandering between styles. For ‘Iron Age’ the band made a concerted effort to underscore their commitment to rock, crafting a record that simply confounded any notion that they were easing off the gas pedal.
With ‘Iron Age’ MF was clearly going after the classic metal / hard rock audience of the early 1980s. MF never sounded more focused and inspired than it does on this excellent LP, and forceful gems like “Rock ‘N Roll 2 Nite,” “U Turn Me On” and “Movin’ On” indicated that MF should forget about what black radio was playing and simply concentrate on being a great metal / hard rock band (which is what it really wanted to be, anyway).
R&B radio, which had been a strong supporter of MF’s 1978 hit “Love Changes,” wasn’t about to play an album this metal-oriented — and sadly, Rock radio ignored it as well.
With the right promotion, “Iron Age” could have made Mother’s Finest a big hit with the Quiet Riot / Judas Priest / Scorpions first half of the Eighties crowd, but the album was a commercial flop instead of the big commercial breakthrough that it should have been.
Nonetheless, the fact remains that this for years out-of-print LP is among MF’s most rewarding albums, for many, the pinnacle of the band’s output, now remastered in its full potential.
