DAYLIGHT ROBBERY – Decree Absolute (2024) *HQ*
DAYLIGHT ROBBERY was formed back in the ’80s by respected Birmingham rock musicians Tony Nicholl (vocals) and Mark Carleton (guitars) and Colin Murdoch (Bass), initially with a classic Melodic Rard Rock AOR sound, sharing stages / support slots for the big ones like Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Uriah Heep, etc.
Since the last decade has been heavily active regularly releasing solid albums, and when Nicholl quit a few years ago, Carleton and Colin Murdoch are sharing the lead vocals. Additionally, DAYLIGHT ROBBERY sound & style has been morphing incorporating new elements but always based in melody and Eighties feeling.
Today, DAYLIGHT ROBBERY is releasing their new album ”Decree Absolute”, perhaps their most rocking effort to date. While still retaining their rich musicality, the focus for the new songs have gone back to basics in a Mr. Big / Talas kind of way!
Indeed, songs like ‘Run for Your Life’, ‘Scarred’, ‘Godz’, ‘Hardtime’ are driven by rapid riffs in the style of the first Mr. Big self-titled album, the bass guitar is fat and defined as in Talas, and the overall sense of the album is full-throttle energy. And works very well for DAYLIGHT ROBBERY.
Of course Carleton and Murdoch voices aren’t Eric Martin, both are rougher, however they fit the songs for the most part. The not-so melodious vocals are supplemented by the guitar work which creates fine harmonies contributing to the overall granite sound of the band on this new album.
Don’t get us wrong, ”Decree Absolute” isn’t heavy, just much more ‘rocking’ than previous DAYLIGHT ROBBERY works. There’s still midtempo songs with atmospheres, occasional AOR touches, and a semi-ballad.
Special mention goes for closing track ‘Fallen Star’, a really well elaborated classic hard rock mid-paced track with fine arrangements and stupendous guitar work.
”Decree Absolute” explores a ‘new side’ from DAYLIGHT ROBBERY, more visceral and rocking, which in fact it’s the ADN of these guys, they grew up and formed as musicians in the classic era of British rock.
