And… here’s more for DEF LEPPARD fans, as requested, the essential “Pyromania” in its MFSL Mobile Fidelity Labs 24 karat Gold Ultradisc II Original Master Recording. Regarded as the ‘ultimate listening experience”, these Ultradisc II technology are limited edition releases with each gold CD being mastered from the original studio master tape, rendering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible.
Only for rabid completists or worth the investment?

In the Nineties, the release of “Pyromania” was licensed out to Mobile Fidelity Labs, who used the original master tapes to create these 24kt gold ‘Ultradisc II’. The discs are custom pressed on gold, because it doesn’t oxidize.
Although the back cover states that ‘all liner notes, photos and artwork from the original LP are faithfully recreated’, this is not so. This Ultradisc II release come with the lyrics, but nothing else. Not even a producer credit.
And the weird thing is, Def Leppard didn’t even print lyrics in their albums at the time. Anyway, I love to have ’em here.

Now, what about the sound?
First of all; I dig modern remasters. In most cases, the resulting beefed up sound is superior to enjoy on a wide range of players, from a car stereo to a high end system.
This Mobile Fidelity Labs is NOT remastered, the aim is to ‘rendering music reproduction as close to the actual recording session as possible’. So “Pyromania Ultradisc II” sounds like the original masters should do.
Is it better than a regular CD, SHM-CD, etc? Depends on you. But mostly, the music system you use.

Tested on a high quality audiophile rig, “Pyromania Ultradisc II” sounds incredible.
There’s a slightly wider soundstage all over much better than a regular CD press, and comes warm out of the speakers with superb mid-range frequencies.
The guitars feel so lively like if Clark, Collen and especially Pete Willis’ rhythm parts were played by themselves in your living room.
