RINGO STARR‘s guest-laden 20th solo album “What’s My Name” will include a collaboration with Paul McCartney on a song written by their former bandmate John Lennon is due on Oct. 25.
Recorded in his home studio, the album also includes songs with longtime collaborators Joe Walsh (ex Eagles), Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), Steve Lukather (Toto), Richard Page (Mr Mister), Colin Hay (Men At Work), Edgar Winter and more.

Starr didn’t wanted to be in an old-fashioned recording studio anymore; “I’ve had enough of the big glass wall and the separation. We are all together in here, whoever I invite over. This is the smallest club in town.”
The result is a lively feeling on “What’s My Name”.

The inspiration to return to “Grow Old Along With Me,” one of Lennon’s unfinished late-period songs, came courtesy of former Lennon producer Jack Douglas.
About the song, Starr said: “Paul came over and he played bass and sings a little bit on this with me. So, John’s on it, in a way. I’m on it and Paul’s on it. It’s not a publicity stunt. This is just what I wanted. And the strings that Jack arranged for this track, if you really listen, they do one line from George Harrison’s song ‘Here Comes the Sun.’
So in a way, it’s the four of us.”

“Gotta Get Up to Get Down,” co-written with Starr’s brother-in-law Walsh, sounds pretty early Eighties with classic rock spirit and that trademark Walsh guitar work / sound all over.
The title track, composed by Aussie Colin Hay, turns on Starr’s familiar in-concert chant. The song actually dates back a few years, but Hay was able to retrieve it for use in these sessions. It’s a fun uptempo rocker with a bluesy heart.

But the highlight here is Starr’s latest collaboration with Steve Lukather, who earlier worked with Starr on a pair of tracks for the All Starr Band. The guitarist really adds ‘magic’ to this melodic midtempo tune, with a certain… yes, Toto touch. The guitar solo kills, and it’s pure Lukather.
This song alone worth the CD.
