SISTERS DOLL – Welcome To The Dollhouse (2012)
*
From the south of Western Australia , the Mileto brothers — Brennan 19, Bryce 17 and Austin 14 (!) — formed SISTERS DOLL in mid 2010.
The boys won several band competitions, completed a successful 2012 tour in their homeland and recently flew to the US in August to play at the Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood, the closing party of the LA Rock Honors, plus the world-famous Whisky A Go Go.
The rave reviews received from the press and venue owners prompting them to record their debut album “Welcome To The Dollhouse”.
My first approach with these young boys was the video off the first single “Dollhouse” (check below).
We begin with a very hot girl looking to enter a house. Given the title of the song, it’s no surprise this is not a typical house. The creepy horror movie beginning is also a dead giveaway.
Once we are inside and see the band it’s time to take a step back… all the way back to 1986.
Do we have spandex pants with red racing stripes? Check! How about teased up hair drenched in Aqua Net? Check! Okay, finally, do we have pink striped drum sticks? Check!
This is officially a 1986 glam parody?
Anyway, opener “Dollhouse” isn’t the best track of the album.
This young trio, parody or not, plays ’80 American hard / glam / sleazy influenced by Tuff, Motley, Ratt, Faster Pussycat and more recently Steel Panther, sometimes succeding, sometimes not.
I think the more solid track here is “Are You Scared of Clowns” where Sisters Doll opted for a more melodic rock sound and compositional style.
Other well rounded tracks are the acoustically based ala Cinderella “Lonely Room”, simple but contagious, and the rocking, riff-driven “Falling”.
The rest are average rockin’ tunes with some commercial choruses here and there, straight riffage and naive arrangements.
Sisters Doll is a really, really young bunch (none of the Mileto brothers were born in 1986!) and need to improve in all aspects.
But this is a cool band and a cool release, time will tell if they are ready for bigger things…
