Wider fanbases of Dream Theater, Mr. Big and Black Country Communion will definitely stand up and take notice; supergroup PORTNOY SHEEHAN MACALPINE SHERINIAN is presenting their first release “Live In Tokyo” on DVD, Blu-ray, 2CD and digital audio and video formats.

Recorded last November 14, this 95-minute concert showcases performances from each of the members’ careers and collaborations. The result was a deep cornucopia of these tremendous musicians highlights, delivered in an incredible fluid way always surprising and never boring at all.
The group unleashed a fierce storm of sonic mastery on songs such as “Shy Boy” from Sheehan’s band Talas, MacAlpine’s “The Stranger”, Sherinian’s “Apocalypse 1470 B.C.” and Dream Theater’s “A Change Of Seasons: The Crimson Sunrise”, just to name some top moments.

There’s a fleet version of “Farandole” from his underrated eighties band Talas, Sherinian contributes the brilliantly mysterious “Apocalypse 1470 B.C.” as well as “Been Here Before” and “Nightmare Cinema”, the last of which moves with dizzying ease from a giant opening beat to the outer edges of space.
MacAlpine takes center stage for the soaring “The Stranger”, while thunderous updates on Billy Cobham’s ageless “Stratus” and Jeff Beck’s “The Pump” explore some of the band’s foundational influences along the way.
The Live In Tokyo set is rounded out by a trio of Dream Theater songs (the opening “A Change Of Seasons: I The Crimson Sunrise”, “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Lines In The Sand”) and a take on “Acid Rain” from Liquid Tension Experiment, a Dream Theater offshoot band that also featured Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin.

Portnoy formed the lineup to perform at two drum events at the NAMM show in January 2012. Due to overwhelming response, that band has decided to take their show on the road.
Needless to say, this is a great performance / recording (top notch sound), and while of course you have the video version, not all have the time to spend nearly two hours in front of a lead-tv, so you can enjoy this double-CD driving from work or jogging in the park.
