NELSON – Peace Out (2015)
*
Comprising brothers Matthew and Gunnar, NELSON is among my favorite Melodic Rock band in history. Reading that their new album “Peace Out“, due for Frontiers Records next May 18, will be their last as ‘Nelson’ before launching a new project, leaves me a little sad.
But not, put a big smile in your face; “Peace Out” is a return to the traditional primal Nelson sound and a future classic for the genre.
Indeed, “Peace Out” it is 100% early ’90s Nelson stuff. It doesn’t feel like there is a gap of 25 years between this record and the debut “After The Rain”. It’s very similar in sound and style when it comes to their Melodic Rock roots – but that was the same on their recent Lightning Strikes Twice. It is definitely in line with its predecessor: true ’80s / ’90s melodies with an updated recording technique.
So be ready for tons of harmonies, double-layered vocals and guitars, enriched with some superb hooks.
Nelson found again the right balance between Melodic Rock, Melodic Hard and Pop. All those elements combined end up in a highly enjoyable album.
The opener “Hello Everybody” is the perfect start for 60 minutes of Rock ‘n Roll entertainment. With the ultra catchy “Back In The Day”, the rockin’ “Rockstar” and “Autograph”, Nelson put some really amazing Melodic Rock gems on this album that don’t need to hide from Nelson’s classic songs.
There’s trademark Nelson hooks on “You And Me” and the fun “Bad For You”, all adorned by the amazing bros’ vocal harmonies.
The production is utterly polished in the best Nelson tradition. The two twins still sound like they did back in the days when (Can’t Live Without Your) Love And Affection ruled the radio stations and I still enjoy them singing as well as their skills on the guitar.
“Peace Out” may be the final slab in Nelson’s illustrious melodic career, but it’s grand finale for one of the best exponents of the genre ever.
This is what Melodic Rock is all about, so buy Nelson’s “Peace Out” with your eyes closed.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
