DEEP PURPLE – From The Setting Sun… (In Wacken) [2015]

DEEP PURPLE is releasing two live concerts recorded during the presentation of their last studio album. One is “From The Setting Sun… (In Wacken)” and “… To The Rising Sun (In Tokyo), both available on 2CD/DVD, DVD and LP gatefold vinyl. The Tokyo performance will also be issued on Blu-ray and the Wacken show on Blu-ray 3D.

“From The Setting Sun…” was recorded at the Wacken open air festival in 2013.
The set list – which features both old classics and new songs – is energized by the kick of playing for a huge ‘heavy metal’ crowd, clearly a challenge for Deep Purple, who are used to play in front of their own audience.
Bassist Roger Glover says: “In the sunset, we were treated to a great welcome from the sea of tattoos and black leather facing us. Festival crowds are unique because most people are there for the occasion itself rather than for any particular band.”
The chosen songs were definitely on the “heavier” side too: the opening trio of “Highway Star”, “Into the Fire” and “Hard Lovin’ Man” is a true kick-ass start.

Ian Gillan is in real fine form, and the main soloists, that is guitarist Steve Morse and keyboard genius Don Airey are really inspired during the whole show. There’s stellar versions of new songs “Hell to Pay”, “Vincent Price”, “Above & Beyond” and other post-reunion now-classics.
Uli Jon Roth (ex-Scorpions) comes jammin’ on “Smoke on the Water” before the band finishes the show with the now classic ending of “Hush” and “Black Night” slightly shortened for the timing of the festival.

During this concert, Deep Purple left their ‘safe zone’. That is why this live album is the one that represents a feeling of improvisation and electricity similar to the band’s classic years – more than many other live releases by the band.
Deep purple remains a true driving force and an exceptional live band, and here’s a proof of it.
