PARIS – The World Outside (2016)
Named after their living city, PARIS is the Melodic Rock / AOR band fronted by singer & keyboardist Frederic Dechevanne and guitarist Sebastien Montet presenting their new effort “The World Outside“.
Mostly recorded in UK with the great Steve Newman producing and contributing harmony vocals, the band for the recording is round up by Newman’s English team mates David Bartlett (bass) and Rob McEwen (drums), ensuring the best possible presentation for these songs due their experience on the genre.
Their Def Leppard inspiration is obvious on opener ‘End of My World’ but the vocals sound a bit strained and the softer style suits them better, be it the AORish ‘When You Find Love’ with a tidy guest guitar solo from Work of Art’s Robert Sall, the quirky ‘Kitesurfing’ with an almost It Bites feel, and the catchy chorus of ‘I Feel Fine’, much in the vein of the recent Find Me record.
Other highlights include the ballad ‘Tears in Your Heart’ (perfect song title!) and ‘Haunted’ bouncing along on classic AOR intros with their blend of keyboards and clean guitar,
‘Stronger’ is another favorite having a tougher vibe and reminding me of Firehouse in their more melodious side.
While perhaps not yet in the same league of bands peddling a similar style such as Work Of Art and Find Me, this is a promising classic AOR / MR effort from Paris, and an interesting alternative to what currently seems to be the Scandinavia and Italian domination of the genre.
