BULLET – Dust To Gold (2018)
Swedish rockers BULLET will release their new album, “Dust To Gold“, on April 20 via Steamhammer / SPV. If you want to understand how Bullet works, you only have to take one look at the ancient tour bus that the five musicians have been conquering the world with for years.
The black, white and red 1964 Volvo B63508 pictured on the new album cover, lovingly referred to as the “Bullet Bus,” with its indestructible six-cylinder engine and countless miles under its frayed seats, is the band’s mobile hotel.
Even the cover artwork photo color temperature makes you think of an old picture taken in the ’70s.
One of the Bullet’s career highlights for sure is their tour with the mighty AC/DC. It’s more than obvious that the rock legend from Down Under had an impact on Bullet’s sound, especially in the past.
But Bullet is more than that. The band is generally inspired by old-school Seventies / Eighties classic metal.
“Dust to Gold” is an uncompromising record and songs are mainly kept fast and furious. ‘Speed and Attack’ breaks first ground and is an opener per excellence. Judas Priest could have delivered the blueprint for this metal anthem.
The AC/DC links became less over time and Bullet shifted their sound more towards traditional, classic European metal.
The mentioned Judas Priest are just one of these influencing factors, but also records of German metal warriors Accept must have span many times in this band rehearsals. Just listen to ‘Fuel the Fire’… it’s pure Accept circa 1984, and a killer track for sure.
There’s some Saxon on ‘One More Round’, a bit of early Krokus on ‘Highway Love’, NWOBHM in the racing ‘Screams in the Night’, and a pinch of Samson in ‘Forever Rise’.
Closer, title track, is one of those midtempo, atmospheric classic metal epic songs with anthemic choruses and fist in the air attitude.
If you didn’t liked Bullet first albums, you better check “Dust To Gold”. AC-DC no more folks, but classic ’80s metal, twin guitar attack, anthemic choruses and old-school vocals.
Outdated? I don’t know, but these guys rock. Hard.
Two thumbs up.
