LEE AARON – Diamond Baby Blues (2018)
Canadian vocalist LEE AARON presents her new album “Diamond Baby Blues”, inspired by classic hard rock and heavy blues featuring 12 new recordings and produced with great feeling.
Step by step former ’80s metal queen Lee Aaron gets back into Rock music after having had a few sidesteps into jazzy sounds. One year ago it was Fire & Gasoline that offered again some very solid rock songs and it’s this 2018 release that stands for a continuation of what could be sensed with the predecessor.
There are own penned tunes on the track list as well as there are some cover songs too of which Deep Purple’s “Mistreated” is probably the most known one for fans of rock music. Talking about “Mistreated”, it’s arranged slightly different with the original still being recognizable, and it’s a very good version.
The song follows the heavy grooving wake-up call “Diamond Baby” which presents a rocking Lee Aaron that is accompanied with heavy riffing. It sounds like Robin Beck yet much more groovy. Killer track and a highlight.
The starting triplet gets completed by “American High” which brings the blues to forefront with a midtempo melodic rock touch, and it’s “I’m a Woman”, a cover version of the Koko Taylor hymn, that brings blues even more into the spotlight.
The disc doesn’t know a real bad song. Tracks like “Miss Mercy” with its awesome chorus (brings to mind Fiona Flanagan), and a surprising, merciless rocking interpretation of Janet Jackson’s ‘Black Cat’ belong to the best I have heard from Lee Aaron up-to-date. “Miss Mercy” kills, and it’s another highlight.
On ballad “Best Thing” she delivers a passionate performance, “Hard Road” is a down-to-earth rock ‘n’ roller with lots of feeling, while “In the Bedroom” comes with a light-hearted party groove.
All really good stuff.
Lee Aaron’s comeback into Rock is really welcomed, because her voice is among the best in the female-fronted field. She’s in top form on “Diamond Baby Blues”, seriously.
Some time ago after reading this would be a ‘bluesy oriented’ album I was afraid of another jazzy record, instead, this is rocking CD full of swagger, biting vocals and great riffs / solos.
The album, recorded together with the Canadian rock legend John Webster, is a prime example of ther signature mix of powerhouse vocals, great guitars, organic keyboards and a rhythm section that rocks as hard as it rocks.
