GARY SCHUTT – Drastic Measures (2020)
Seems this pandemic and almost zero chance to perform live has stimulated the creative spark of many musicians. “Drastic Measures” is the second album former Jeff Scott Soto guitarist GARY SCHUTT wrote and finished during 2020.
He already delighted us with ‘Nightmares, Bad Dreams And Other Alternate Realities’ early this year, and now comes with a bunch of brand new songs, all sung, performed and produced by Schutt himself.
This new album include two songs from the previous recording sessions which were written and recorded during the original full pandemic shutdown. But Gary decided to save them for the next album.
“The song “Drastic Measures”, I felt, would make a great album title as I already had a concept of the art in my head – he says. “The Day After Tomorrow Never Comes” I felt was too similar to a lot of the poppy songs I already had on the Nightmares album, I had too much. I wanted the next album to reflect more of both of those, dark and brooding and happy melodic rock but I also wanted more guitariness! Is that a word?
I just declared Guitariness a word! Theses two songs sat until September when I had some time and some inspiration to start working on this 2020’s second Schutt album.
Even more varied than the previous CD, we find a groovy rocker on ‘Zombie Drive’, heavy funky riffs on ‘Anyone But Me’ (think Richie Kotzen solo), and a great hard rocker on ‘Dreamcatcher’ (love the guitar work). But Gary is becoming a better and better vocalist with each new record, and it shows.
‘A.M.I.I.F.C.’ rocks with an ’80s pulse over a rumbling bass line, while ‘Hide In Plain Sight’ is pure melodic rock. ‘Hide In Plain Sight’ is darker, some kind of a semi-ballad with has some progressive on it two.
Gary tries something different too, with the Beatles-on-acid ‘Ruby Rain’ a very cool song, and radio-ready rock&pop with the 1988-type sweetness of ‘The Day After Tomorrow Never Comes’.
Talented, skilled, self-managed… that’s all Gary Schutt here, a musician who doesn’t stop to grow up and releasing very good music.
