HEAVY BONES – Heavy Bones [Bad Reputation remastered reissue] (2020) *0dayrox EXCLUSIVE*
Bad Reputation Records has just reissued the long time out of print HEAVY BONES self-titled album in a fantastic remastered form. The band was put together by ex-CATS IN BOOTS vocalist Joel Ellis and involving awesome guitarist Gary Hoey (ex-ALLEGIANCE), bassist Rex Tennyson (ex-HELLION), and terrific drummer Frankie Banali (QUIET RIOT and just about everyone in the ’80s) to which this reissue is dedicated after he passed away this 2020 (RIP).
Produced by Richie Zito (The Cult, Mr Big, Bad English, Tyketto) in 1992 with that huge sound from the era regarding Melodic Hard Rock, the only band thing about “Heavy Bones” is its album cover.
With songwriting contributions from Nuno Bettencourt (EXTREME), “Heavy Bones” is a killer album from the genre in a style reminiscent of HARDLINE, HOUSE OF LORDS circa Sahara / Demons Down, MOTLEY CRUE Dr. Feelgood and of course some CATS IN BOOTS.
Heavy Bones (like Hardline), arrived too late into the scene, as when the album was released the musical climate was already changing. But they had an abundance of talent.
“The Hand That Feeds”, “4: AM T.M.” and “Where The Livin’ Is Easy” are great, kickin’ hard rockers, while “Turn It On” and “Anna” show the band’s sensitive side via elaborated power ballads with exceptional results. The band – and uber producer Richie Zito, who also play keyboards – create different atmospheres as well on the acoustic-based “Beating Heart”.
The vocal harmonies shine all over the recording – all members contribute and there’s additional help from the ever-present Tommy Funderburk.
And we have the distinctive drumming & percussion playing from the late Frankie Banali.
Heavy Bones deserved to be huge, if appeared in 1988-89 this album would have been platinum.
A very welcomed reissue, a powerful remaster which brings upfront the bass guitar and the kick-drum.
