DOOMSDAY OUTLAW – Damaged Goods (2023)
If you are new to them, DOOMSDAY OUTLAW are a heavy groove-laden, hard rock band from Sheffield, UK, and when we say ‘groove’ that’s in spades; their upcoming new album “Damaged Goods” really sends atomic waves to your body.
Things start heavy on the massive ‘In Too Deep’ – which moves and grooves with a fantastic vocal melody, some superb axe work, and the fat bass locking the rhythm down with drummer John Willis. ‘On My Way’ gives us some fun rock n’ roll almost in the vein of The Quireboys/Faces only not as shambolic – just get the chorus, you’ll be singing it all day then we get some Black Crowes style southern soul on ‘If This Is The End’ before things stay southern on the made for a booze up ‘Turn Me Loose’.
Things get heavy again on ‘You Make It Easy’ which has a Led Zep-like refrain before we get the recent single ‘Runaway’ which was made for radio with ists infectious melody. ‘My Woman Comes On Strong’ has versatile vocalist Phil Poole sounding like a young Glenn Hughes – yes he’s that good!
Then ‘Nowhere Left To Hide’ goes into Allman Bros territory with some wonderful twin lines from Alez De’Elia and Steve Broughton. Doomsday Outlaw goes acoustic on ‘One More Sip’ which is another fun rocker before we get to some heavy blues rock with ‘It Never Gets Old’.
‘Walking The Line’ is classic bues with a major kick up the rear until the final track brings the big ballad ‘The Little Things’ – ain’t nothing little about this, just pure class.
Doomsday Outlaw has knocked it out of the park with is new! album. The guitar pair are on the money and Willis is his usual beastlike self behind the kit, but in Phil Poole they have a singer who is developing to be one of the best the UK has to offer. This fella is every bit as good as Hughes, Overland, Rodgers, etc. A big shout to Chris D’Adda, Rich Collins and Dave Draper for producing these fantastic sounds too.
