Finnish prog rock group 5th SEASON is releasing its debut self-titled album “5th Season“. As a band 5th Season combines the talents of top musicians in the Finnish rock scene. Fronted by singer, guitarist, composer and award winning producer Tapio Ylinen, the record features as guests the talents of Pink Floyd vocalist Durga McBroom as well as keyboardist Jukka Gustavson, founding member of the legendary Finnish Prog band Wigwam.
“5th Season” is inspired by classic Prog acts as heard on the lengthy instrumental opener “In Memoriam…” plenty of guitars, moog, mellotron, etc, creating an upbeat Seventies vibe. But then 5th SEASON surprises with second track “Daylight’s End”, a song-format track with an AORish feel like a mix between Mike + The Mechanics / Alan Parsons Project.

And this is the motto of this very enjoyable and varied CD; melodic easy tunes and classic progressive. We have a phenomenal Yes -influenced ballad “I Am The Waves”, and then a bluesy-rock track on”Don’t Wanna Sing Your Blues”. Guest Gustavson really adds his own flavor with his wonderful ‘real’ Hammond, with the music, at places, recalling Uriah Heep.
Highly Recommended
