DON HENLEY – I Can’t Stand Still ’82 (2024 Remaster) *HQ*
As the Eagles’ acclaimed Sphere residency continues in Las Vegas, Nevada, Rhino is reissuing DON HENLEY 1982’s debut solo album “I Can’t Stand Still“. The 11-track LP has been remastered 2024 from the original analog tapes and is be available on CD and 180-gram vinyl.
Back in the early Eighties, with the Eagles on hiatus, Henley released his first solo album in 1982, the gold-certified ”I Can’t Stand Still”. The record included the smash hit “Dirty Laundry,” a sharp critique of the media that launched his solo career and established his voice as a singer-songwriter. Musically, the song, and the whole album, is pure ’80s sounding major production.
Of course a cream of session musicians appear alongside Mr. Henley’s soaring vocals: almost all TOTO including Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Steve Porcaro, but also talented Waddy Wachtel, Joe Walsh, Leland Sklar, Timothy B. Schmit, JD Souther, and many more.
Henley’s first solo album may still have had the ghost of the Eagles lingering in the corners, but for the most part it showcases his stalwart partnership with producer and songwriter Danny Kortchmar, who also play guitars, keyboards, and does backing vocals.
The album showcased some of Henley’s frustrations at the time. “Dirty Laundry” displays his disgust with the media and tabloid news coverage, and “Johnny Can’t Read,” shows his displeasure with the American educational system.
”I Can’t Stand Still” rings with the righteous indignation of a man who has taken a good look at what’s going on around him and decided at least to speak his mind about it… the record doesn’t offer any solutions, but how many rock&pop records do?
”I Can’t Stand Still” scores points for its palpable anger; for its lean, classic arrangements; for the lack of self-indulgence in the playing, the excellent production, Henley’s stupendous singing, and for its overall point of view, which links the disparate songs together and gives the album an admirable coherence.
Henley’s adept combination of lyrical wit and thought-provoking staidness begins to materialize on ”I Can’t Stand Still”, paving the way for an extremely accomplished solo career.
This is a great remaster, powerful and defined.
