CHERRI ROKKETT – Quality You Can Taste! [Limited Edition LP] (2018)
Before hordes of anxious teens with studded belts huddled together to watch talentless grunge / emo bands, there was CHERRI ROKKETT, one of the more distinctive Chicago hair-metal band from the ’80s. They never went to LA, never played at the Sunset Strip, but the rocked all over the US East Coast.
Their just released album titled “Quality You Can Taste!” available on vinyl LP only (1st press extremely limited to 89 “Cherri Red” vinyl) includes seven songs from – yes, 1989 – that were remixed and remastered from the original masters.
Additionally, the track “MCMLXXXIX” (or “1989”) was written in 2017 and it’s the first song that the two founder members had written together since 1990. The track was produced by Chip Z’Nuff of Enuff Z’Nuff at his studio in Blue Island, Illinois. Chip also played bass on the song.
Cherri Rokkett formed in 1988 in Chicago and was focused on partying hard, living fast and performing reputed live shows. Cherri Rokkett was as much about the music as it was about mirroring the reckless rock-star lifestyle, their mantra “life is tough as it is, so let’s have fun” was very fitting.
Musically they are a mix of Poison, Motley Crue, Ratt – these band’s more ‘hair metal’ eras. However, despite the ‘sleazy’ motto, Cherri Rokkett are quite melodic.
Take as example ‘Angel Eyes’ a melodic midtempo with even an AORish flavor on it, ‘Cherri Wine’ is a power ballad, while ‘Lonely’ has a melodic rock foundation. “New Way Home” is acoustically driven, so en vogue at the era. As you see, half the album is midpaced.
For uptempo party rockers there’s the catchy ‘Do You Want Me’, the swagger of ‘Miss All American’, and the new track “MCMLXXXIX”, one of the best on offer here, and you can hear Chip Z’Nuff touch on it.
Another ‘lost’, obscure band rescued from oblivion, Cherri Rokkett’s “Quality You Can Taste!” is a fun, cool representation of a bygone era. This is some kind of a collectors item, limited to few LP’s.
Two thumbs up.
