MULLETT – The Originals (2021)
Seems lost ’80s albums reissue label Eonian Records is back, ad they will be releasing soon “The Originals“, the debut album from MULLETT. Formed a decade ago as a tribute band of all ’80s hard rock, hair metal and glam rock n’ roll culture, MULLETT have been performing from corporate functions and private parties to college campuses, theaters, nightclubs and casinos.
Now it’s time for their original songs, hence the title of album. What you would expect from a band opening their debut CD with a song titled ’80s Girl’?
This is pure fun bringing back the Eighties paraphernalia of Poison, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, complete with party-ready choruses, cool guitar riffs, keyboards… and lots of cowbell.
Already praised by musicians from the era – “Bang Bang, what’s that sound? It’s MULLETT kicking the ’80s ass every night!” (Ted Poley) / “MULLETT is the most authentic new act bringing the ’80s back! (Janet Gardner of Vixen)” – these guys not only wear spandex and a lot of hairspray, but they have the chops.
The good thing here is that the songs are catchy as hell, and while MULLET uses all the cliché from the genre on purpose, all work in their favor not resulting in a tribute or a parody. These songs rock.
The main riff in ‘All About Love’ is huge and the swirling keys in the background invites you to dance, ’80’s Girl’ claims to be included into an Eighties movie remake, and ‘Talking To A Stranger’ does what Bon Jovi aren’t for their first fans.
Heck, ‘Stop & Go (Follow Your Heart)’ even adds an AOR touch here and there, and if MTV still would play some power ballads, ‘I’m On My Way’ ticks all the boxes.
Production could be better, seems some tracks are recorded at different sessions, but that doesn’t distract the feel good vibe and fun time listening to “The Originals”.
