STEELOVER – Glove Me (1984) [Mausoleum Classix CD reissue] *HQ*
After 38 years they released their debut LP, Belgium melodic hard rockers STEELOVER are back in 2022 with sophomore release titled ‘Stainless’ – featured here at 0dayrox. And it’s a cool opportunity to present here as well that first album, 1984’s “Glove Me” in the only official CD reissue, which by the way, is out of print with used copies being sold for over €110.
With an album artwork which looks ridiculous but fun at the same time, “Glove Me” achieved cult status over the years, and it’s easily one of the best melodic hard / metal from a Belgium band from the first half of the Eighties.
Taking influences from the NWOBHM scene from band like Praying Mantis, but also with a slightly German (Scorpions) & Swedish (220 Volt) touches, STEELOVER sounds tight and well oiled in the 10 tracks of “Glove Me”, an album produced with that ‘1982-1984′ atmosphere; short songs to the point, riff driven, and very melodic.
The band was formed in the early 80s by three friends living in Liege, Belgium, the guitarists Pat Freson & Mel Presti and the bassist Nick Gardi. In search of a drummer, they threw their sights on Rudy Lenners upon his return from Germany, having left the famous German band Scorpions. Lenners produced “Glove Me” as well.
Rudy proposed to contact Vince Cardillo, a singer who had already on one hand experience, and on the other hand already recorded an album in London, it will fit perfectly.
They all felt the magic during the first rehearsal. In no time, Steelover recorded their first album ”Glove Me” which was released under the label Mausoleum.
The album sold for over more than 400.000 copies, also reaching America and Japanese stores. They followed the LP release with a tour across different countries like The Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium including Forest National opening for Bon Jovi and KISS.
By 1986, Vince decided to leave the band dor a solo career. Replaced by Dani Klein, the second album was recorded but never released. Klein left the band after a short time with Mel Presti to start a new act under the name Vaya Con Dios.
STEELOVER came back in 2017 with a new E.P. (including single ”Wild and Free” mixed by the legendary producer and and mixing engineer Tommy Hansen) but without Vince and Nel.
In 2019, Rudy Lenners greeted the audience one last time before retiring from his musical career at the Golden Age festival with Vince as special guest.
After the show Vince, Pat & Nick decided to continue the Steelover’s adventure and started to look for another drummer and another guitarist. The result is the band’s new 2022 album
“Glove Me” is cool throwback LP with that classic early 80s, late 70s hard rock flavor, both in style & sound. Songs like “Hold Tight”, “Need The Heat”, “Struck Down” and “Never Before” takes you back to a time when rock n’ roll was fun, and puts a big smile on your face.
