BLACK STAR SINNERS – Black Star Sinners (2022)
Established 2019 in L.A., BLACK STAR SINNERS is one of these bands that keeps the Sunset Strip rock n’ roll style alive, still performing the Hollywood club circuit like the Whisky A Go-Go and all the Bay Area venues. Their self-titled full length debut “Black Star Sinners” album confirms from every corner the ’80s hard rock music isn’t dead in the USA.
BLACK STAR SINNERS comprises veteran musicians whom where there in L.A. back in 1985, plus a young talented frontman that didn’t, but absorbed his daddy’s LP collection for sure. L.A. Guns bassist Johnny Martin play live shows as band member from time to time as well.
The band delivers here 10 high octane, guitar fueled glammy hard rockers plenty of gang choruses with a sound & style as time has not passed since the mid-80s. Oh and they do a pretty killer cover of Def Leppard’s ‘Let it Go’ (check out the video below).
The CD opens with “Meet The Devil”, fun and upbeat rocking song with lead vocalist Walt Deadly really taking the song to another level with his terrific singing. He certainly shows off his various vocal ranges during the track and lead guitarist Ash Star delivers a cool solo.
All songs are pure Sunset Blvd stuff: “Die on the Hill” has some Skid Row on it, ‘Livin’ The Life’ rocks with a very G N’ R 1986 swaggering, while “Stars In Japan” adds a bit of Hanoi Rocks craziness.
”Hold on to the Night” is a very good midtempo melodic rocker, while on ‘Mr. Rude’ the band go for hair metal circa 1985. As said, they do a very cool cover of Def Depp’s ‘Let it Go’, really enjoying the cover.
Closer “Degenerated” is different. It’s another cover, this time from glam / punk band D-Generation, and sung by guitarist Philthy Rych who is no longer in the band as he retired from music business. It’s a raw track, and while is more like ‘Faster Pussycat on steroids, it works very well with the rest of the material.
Dude, glammy hard rock is still alive in America, just give ‘Black Star Sinners’ a proper listen. These guys rock hard capturing the L.A. 80s feel very well.
