MANRAZE – I Surrender (2013)

MANRAZE — the side project of Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen and Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook — are releasing their new EP “I Surrender”, that gives great anticipation to their next full length CD in the making.
Manraze began back in 2005 with the release of their debut EP receiving rave reviews, but the band was put on hold soon as the members needed to went back to their ‘day jobs’.
They reconvened again in 2011 to release the 12-track CD ‘PunkFunkRootsRock’ (presented here on this blog) which included an amazing cover of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Fire’.
Manraze, which also features Simon Laffy – the rockin’ bass player of Collen’s former glam-band Girl, also introduces on this new recording the collaboration of soul female singer Debbi Blackwell-Cook providing harmony vocals.
The EP starts off with a familiar Def Leppard-feel pop rocker “I Surrender” that is very infectious with some of Collen’s best guitar work.
Next, the band brings back a newly recorded version of “All I Wanna Do” from ‘PunkFunkRootsRock’. This is a completely different take as the acoustic backdrop gives a loose feeling to song, while the closing “Connected” (recorded live in the studio) is a raw rocker with influences from some of the biggest names in rock.
When it comes to ‘spin-off’ bands, fans flock to them to find some hidden music that some artists may have been keeping a secret from their main band or that these artists just want to try something totally different.
Manraze is the culmination of what Phil Collen does in his own take apart from Def Leppard, spicing his music with many diverse genres, but basically rocking.
