BOYSVOICE – BoysVoice [Yesterrock remaster]
Germany brought forth many great melodic hard rock acts during the ’80s / ’90s, but I don’t think that many of you might know one of the best: BOYSVOICE. The band’s self-titled debut from 1990 is a cult classic from the genre, and has been out of print for years.
Fortunately YesterRock records has re-released “BoysVoice” in co-operation with Universal Music Germany and the band. The record also was remastered by singer / guitar player Mani Gruber.
Located in Munich, this band founded by vocalist and guitar player Mani Gruber showed up at the end of the ’80s and succeeded in signing a deal with a major label, who released the band’s self-titled debut album in 1990.
“BoysVoice” is an awesome collection of slick, polished melodic hard rock songs full of catchy melodies, hooks galore and huge choruses pumped by terrific harmony backing vocals.
Often compared with countrymen Bonfire due to Mani Gruber’s vocals similar to Claus Lessmann (Bonfire’s lead singer), in fact BoysVoice is much more melodic and commercial.
You can’t go wrong with fantastic numbers such as “Different Noises”, title track “BoysVoice”, “Chain Reaction” or “Bad Boys”, and if you want more edge, the hard rocker “Love Stealer” (kick ass song).
There’s also a superb ballad in “Searching For You” including acoustics and slightly Americanized in sound akin Damn Yankees, while “Cold Summer Nights” is another slow tune but in a mid-tempo mould, really power ballad sounding.
Full of powerful and catchy songs, it didn’t surprise me that “BoysVoice” spawned a couple of successful singles which were video clips for the songs “Love Stealer” and “City Of Your Dreams”, both receiving good airplay on MTV.
A headliner tour in their home country as well as support slots for The Sweet and Ian Gillan followed, but a tour with label mates Axxis was cancelled at the eleventh hour. More difficulties surfaced when EMI decided not to pick up the option for a second album and first the drummer and then the bassist decided to leave. With a new rhythm section a second album was released by KDC in 1993, but more somber in style.
In the same league of Bonfire, Victory or Vice, “BoysVoice” is more than a highly recommended addition to your Melodic Hard Rock collection, it’s indeed one of the best albums from the genre coming out from Europe that year.
Don’t be fooled by the album artwork, you’ll be surprised by the awesome music packed inside: German MHR at its prime.
