ANGEL – Risen (2019)

Glam metal / Pomp sensations ANGEL, one time label mates of KISS, adorn themselves in white and proudly present this heavenly new album 2019: “Risen”, out next October 4th. Founding members Punky Meadows and Frank DiMino roll back the clock to the glory days of melodic hard rock with 16 brand new compositions and one fantastic re-working of the band’s classic song “Tower”.

Four and a half decades after their glorious beginning and two scores years since their last studio platter saw the light of day, the American glam heroes mustered the strength to lay down a new album and a bunch of lovely new songs.
Still, the sextet do so not on the fresh recordings of “Angel Theme” and “Tower” which bookend the album, referencing their eponymous debut; instead, they dedicate “1975” to the same time frame and let this little prog-tinged epic drift down memory lane, stating that “the spirit’s still alive” while their honeyed harmonies seem to show disinterest in keeping of the flame.

“Slow Down” is a killer arms-flaunting belter whose start-stop flow borrows lyrics from a certain Larry Williams classic, “Shot Of Your Love” is truly irresistible, then the histrionic, arena-sized bravado of “(Punky’s Couch Blues) Locked, Cocked, Ready To Rock” rocks like Hell (or ‘angelic’ Heaven?), while the assault of “Our Revolution” is a showcase for DiMino’s vocals – which are intact.

“Don’t Want You To Go” is one of my favorites, where the guys bring back that magic when they were the pinnacle of pompy AOR.
Focused, in fine form, and musically delivering what the fans want, “Risen” marks one of ‘the comback of the year’: Angel, the kings of glammy pomp AOR / melodic hard rock.
