SHY – Excess All Areas [Rock Candy remaster +4] (2019) *EXCLUSIVE*
One of the greatest Melodic Hard Rock / AOR albums of all time just has been ‘Remastered & Reloaded‘ by Rock Candy Records; SHY “Excess All Areas” including 4 bonus tracks.
Before undertaking their all-important third album, 1987’s “Excess All Areas”, RCA relocated Shy to Los Angeles to soak up the Californian melodic hard rock radio vibe. Songwriting session started soon and the recording label secured the services of – omnipresent in most great ’80s records – talented Neil Kernon to produce.
The result was an awesome blend of American flavored AOR played in a British melodic hard fashion, and one of my top 50 Best Of albums of All Time.
During the mid-Eighties Shy were perceived as one of the best hopes to ignite the British homegrown hard rock scene. They were tipped to follow in the footsteps of similar leaning melodic rock bands such as Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, who were enjoying huge success appealing to both pop-rock and traditional hard rock fans.
With this, their third album, the band refined their sound and made a concerted attempt to square up to the challenge before them.
Evidence of their new-found focus was the selection of a world-renowned and highly respected producer; Neil Kernon, a man who had overseen many successful records, including Autograph, Dokken, Kansas and Queensrÿche.
The band also seriously immersed themselves into writing and refining their material, often co-writing with the likes of Michael Bolton, Don Dokken and Bob Kulick. The result was a masterful album that certainly caused heads to turn and platitudes to spill forth.
Originally issued in January 1987, the album boasts one killer song after another. ‘Emergency’, ‘Under Fire’ and ‘Break Down the Walls’ (co-written by Don Dokken) show the more edgy side of the band, then the superb ‘Young Heart” is a wonderful slice of pure keyboad-driven AOR of the highest order.
The two powerful ballads are great as well; ‘Just Love Me’ and the lovely ‘When Love Is Over’, and we have a very good cover of Cliff Richard‘s ‘Devil Woman’ done in a melodic rock mold, plus another mighty ’80s keyboard heaven tune in ‘Talk To Me’.
Although it’s infused with massive harmonies, precision musicianship and superb arrangements, the record is most noticeably propelled and driven by Tony Mill’s extraordinary lead vocals.
Shy created in “Excess All Areas” their finest record, without a doubt among the 10 best in the AOR / Melodic rock genre recorded by any British band during the ’80s.
It’s fair to say that this album is a perfect slice of Eighties melodic hard rock / AOR, one that remains a benchmark for a style that actually still sounds fresh and relevant, even more with this clear remastering job by Rock Candy including 4 juicy bonus tracks, all single B-sides and all darn catchy as the rest of this awesome album.
You can’t get British AOR / MR better than this, and suffice to say; “Excess All Areas” is A MUST HAVE
