UK proggers THE PINEAPPLE THIEF are releasing their brand new album “It Leads To This” next February 9. The band worked on new compositions for nearly three years, and it was worth the effort, showcasing the contrast within The Pineapple Thief’s music universe. Loud and calm, unbound energy and the precision of a Swiss watch; it all comes together in these new songs.
To highlight a few songs from the new album doesn’t make a lot of sense, as each of the tunes is a grandiose composition that acts as a treat for your ears. However, mentioning for example ‘The Frost’ is a good thing, as the track features all the trademarks of The Pineapple Thief’s music in great fashion. There are the calmer and fragile moment while nearly six-minute chapter also includes some vibrant sound where energy breaks through the soulful wrapping.
A song that also belongs to the rocking ones on the album is ‘Rubicon’. Equipped with a solid level of heaviness and a great melody line, ‘Rubicon’ blossoms immediately and still entail enough details for discovering something new with each time listening to the track.

The biggest thing that we noticed is the length of the album and the songs. The album is 41 minutes long and the longest track is a second under 6 minutes. Neither the album nor the songs overstay their welcome. This means there is no overblown epics, not that the band do many of those.
Rather, this is an album about melody and atmosphere. The songs mix in some thick riffs now and then, but they are offset by quieter moments.

While still progressive, this is an album for a wider audience. There’s melody, some song format pop-rock, heavier moments. “It Leads To This” is a case study in dynamics. The brief heavier parts are at a premium so they do hit harder when they come.
The key here is that the songs are solid. The Pineapple Thief honor the songs first. The arrangements are designed to benefit the music rather than wow the listener. I do think it’s perhaps a song or two short but that’s not my decision. The Pineapple Thief know their sound, know their niche and capitalize on both on “It Leads to This.”
