BIG TALK (ex- RIO) – Big Talk [Late ’80s demos / Unreleased] *Exclusive*
Starting working together in a band called Bombay (and releasing a couple of singles) in the first half of the ’80s, Steve Rodford (son of Jim Rodford of the band The Zombies) and Jon Neill wrote many songs and decided to form their own outfit with both musicians performing all instruments, with Jon providing the lead vocals.
The project evolved to be named RIO with the duo securing a record deal and releasing a single. The company liked their mix of radio-friendly melodies and stylized AOR feel, and a full length was recorded and released 1985. Titled “Borderland”, the album was released in Europe and America, and instantly become a favorite for Melodic Rock / AOR aficionados. Another album was issued next year, however the recording contract ended after that.
But Rodford and Jon Neill continued composing and recording demos with the project re-branded BIG TALK (not to be confused with a Swedish band). While it was a short-lived venture and no music was officially released, BIG TALK recorded some very good demos circa 1987.
All these demos are featured here with a fine sound quality, well recorded & mixed and musically much in the style of RIO, but songwriting-wise, even better. Here BIG TALK / RIO added that 1987-1988 British feeling, much more AOR. It’s elegant, smooth music and it’s such a crime these songs never seen a proper release.
Eighties connoisseurs will dig and love BIG TALK.
