Y&T (as ‘Yesterday And Today’) – OneTwo [first ST + Struck Down] Remastered / *Exclusive*
After the recent Rock Candy remasters of Y&T early albums, one of you asked for their first two records when the band operated under the YESTERDAY AND TODAY moniker. These LP’s were released via London Records, their label before being signed by major A&M. So few chances for a remastered reissue.
However Y&T mastermind Dave Meniketti got access to the master tapes and commissioned the remastering of first LP ‘Yesterday and Today‘ and follower ‘Struck Down‘ to Ken Lee, releasing the CD by himself via his website under the title “OneTwo“.
“OneTwo”, indeed, is a single disc containing the first two Yesterday And Today albums which were the holy grail for Y&T fans getting into the band in the ’80s and beyond, being hopelessly out of print for many years.
In 1992, a little company called Mondo Records released them on CD (unofficially). The sound quality left a lot to be desired. Anyway, and I’m guessing a lot of newer Y&T fans heard these seminal albums for the first time, then.
And then they were out of print again, save for costly imports.
Around 2005 the Y&T camp finally started to make some headway with Universal Music, which had absorbed ALL three major labels the group had recorded for, London, A&M, and Geffen; to re-release their own music.
However, in many a forum discussion Meniketti had repeatedly stated that the master tapes for the first 2 albums (London Records) were lost.
So it was a nice surprise when Meniketti announced that this 2-in-1 CD “OneTwo” was coming out. The packaging is really simple: absolutely no liner notes, no booklet, no commentary. Well, what matters is the music, right?
And Meniketti / Lee did a really good job at salvaging these two albums.
The first, self-titled ‘Yesterday and Today’ was obviously a low budget production, and you can’t do too much with that. It’s a pretty raw slice of seminal hard rock, and the remaster is fine adding some punch.
Particularly is with ‘Struck Down’ which I’m extremely impressed with. It feels lively and quite polished / clean with this remaster.
Speaking about dynamic range, this is what Meniketti commented about it: “My headstrong goal was not to do the modern traditional thing with these masters by digitally slamming the levels hard on the CD. That is way too overused nowadays and the bane of mastering engineers for over a decade.”
In my humble opinion, that’s not entirely true. I was expecting an old-fashioned remastering, and the results are quite loud. It’s not distorted of brickwalled at all, but more in common with modern remastering. I mean, I love modern remaster technics, but with these old rocking records a more natural job works better.
Anyway, “OneTwo” is pure gold having these lost records refreshed and into one single CD. This is the best version of these albums – and only remaster available – you can get.
