SHAPE OF THE NEW SUN – Dying Embers (2017)
We have already presented SHAPE OF THE NEW SUN in our Advanced Releases series, and now the Swedish Melodic Hard Rock band are releasing their full length debut “Dying Embers” via Lions Pride Music, a label that doesn’t stop to sign in great new acts.
Tomas Persic is known as the long-time drummer for Lambretta. When he founded Shape Of The New Sun in 2014, he had not played in a long time. But after attending to a music festival, the passion started to itch in his fingers and with his brother Ivan on guitar plus friends Thomas Kihlberg (vocals) and Håkan Holmström (bass) – all of which have been involved in making music in one form or another – Tomas started the band.
After the first rehearsal, Shape Of The New Sun got a new song composed, and rapidly the list grew meanwhile the group played the first gigs.
Musically, Shape Of The New Sun sound is inspired by the Scandinavian Melodic Hard Rock scene from the late ’80s / early ’90s with a groove from the British hard rock style from the same era.
Yeah, I hear some Thunder on ‘Babylon’ or ‘Don’t Let It Fall’, a bit of Whitesnake in ‘When the Curtain Falls’, and title track brings to mind Jagged Edge UK.
However, the rest is clearly Scandi: ‘The Pain’ has a Damned Nation trademark melody all over, ‘Ghost from the Past’ and ‘Worth Dying For’ akin Jeff Scott Soto’s Humanimal, and ‘Divine’ is in the Bad Habit mold.
Above all these comparisons, Shape Of The New Sun add their own spin with a modern production, and especially, a distinctive guitar sound, which make “Dying Embers” feel quite original.
The songs are diverse avoiding repetitiousness, the band is very tight and Thomas Kihlberg’s deep vocal performance really solid throughout the entire album.
A mature debut from a new band (but comprising experienced musicians) to watch out in the near future. They will be touring Europe presenting the album during the Summer.
