RECKLESS LOVE – InVader (2016)
Next March 11th Finnish glammy melodic rockers RECKLESS LOVE will be releasing their new album “InVader“. You already know Reckless Love… if you like your flamboyant rock served with a side of cheese, you can’t go wrong with this band. Maybe that’s a little unfair, as they know exactly how to write a monster chorus, and the new album is chock full of them.
‘We Are The Weekend’ is the perfect opener for a Reckless Love album, it has a bit of a royal fanfare start with a real ’80s stadium feel that should be able to get even the most reluctant listener’s foot tapping along.
Next, chugging beat leads nicely into a song which could be an anthem for Reckless Love fans, and that’s ‘Hands’. The overall sound reminds Gods Shotgun Messiah with that sleazy vocals and punchy guitars. Singer Olli Herman sounds much like Zinny J Zan and the riffs reinforce that.
Then you have more poppy melodic rockers on the effective ‘Monster’ (lyrics about about plastic surgery and botox), and the absolutely summer pop ‘Child Of The Sun’, a bizarre tune mostly filled with synths.
‘Bullettime’ is a flat out rocker and doesn’t pretend to be anything else, but damn, it’s catchy as hell.
Now this one seems to be written for an Eurovision contest; ‘Scandinavian Girls’ is apparently a response to ‘California Girls’ (David Lee Roth version), fun and catchy, yet cheesy as a Dutch pie.
‘Pretty Boy Swagger’ it’s much more modern, and perhaps too much poppy. There’s a nice rocking riff, yet the broken rhythm turns this ready for radio.
Then we move on a bit, as ‘Rock It’ has a Def Leppard intro in its modern side (X years) with a Poison-like chorus including keyboards. Rocks nice.
Seems Reckless Love reserved the best for the end… ‘Destiny’ is by far, the best track on the record with a true Melodic Rock feel / structure and an AORish vibe especially in the verses. Great song.
Closer ‘Let’s Get Cracking’ shows what the band is capable of when decide to rock hard. This is the heavier track on the record with a stingin’ guitar riff, more swaggering vocals (in a Hanoi Rock vein) and gang backing vocals that add even more charm to the track.
There’s always a place in the world for cheesy rock music, and this new Reckless Love album certainly has a lot of it, but so what, it works well, and what’s more it’s a “feel good” album. You can’t help but smile when you’re listening to it.
Half of “InVader” is really, really poppy and many will hate it, while the rest rocks with tons of melody and catchy choruses.
There are many good Rock bands out there that try to take political stances, or write songs about the state of the world, and that’s great, but sometimes you need a little escapism and that’s where this album comes in.
It doesn’t try to be clever, and it doesn’t try to get any message across other than “have fun”, and that’s the appeal. It will keep you coming back for the fist-pumping choruses and it has the ability to be able to transport you off to some alternate universe where it’s ok to just let your hair down.
