TWILIGHT FORCE – Tales Of Ancient Prophecies (2014)
*
TWILIGHT FORCE is a new band from Sweden who are releasing their debut CD “Tales Of Ancient Prophecies”. The promo sheet promises: “immersing the audience in a magical universe filled with wonder, heroic tales and mesmerizing mythical worlds, through power melodic metal anthems driven by bombastic guitars, giant vocals and easy-going melodies”.
Also Twilight Force labels itself as ‘Adventure Metal’… but what piqued my interest is the name of the vocalist here: talented frontman Christian Eriksson who performed the fantastic vocals in Sunstike’s debut album and early 2014’s highlight titled ‘Rock Your World’.
He was also a determining key factor in the success of last year’s ‘Strange Nostalgia’ by The Theander Expression, a pure jewel of Scandinavian AOR in the most authentic way.
Well, Twilight Force delivers in “Tales of Ancient Prophecies” everything they promise; this is classic Euro metal with a power approach plenty of keyboard fanfares, guitar blasts, a pounding rhythm section, etc.
However, what makes the difference it’s Eriksson vocal work. As he did in Sunstike, the man once again offers a truly impressive performance with an incredible vocal range and an amazing control. This time he shows another side of his capacities stretching himself to reach the stratospheric heights of the material.
Besides, sonically, Twilight Force never is too heavy as the premise here are the melodies, catchiness and the polished sound. Yes, there’s some cheesy lyrics but all is presented in a fun, enjoyable sense.
There are swarms of keyboards for orchestration and solos, a clean rhythm section, lyrical themes of magic and fantasy, choirs of vocals, abundant and bristling guitar solos, and over-the-top – and I mean over-the-top, lead vocals.
Bombastic and epic are the most common denominator of Twilight Force’s identity, as heard on the catchy “Enchanted Dragon Of Wisdom”, “Fall Of The Eternal Winter” or “Gates Of Glory”.
There’s also bits of symphonic elements in “Forest Of Destiny” and “The Power Of The Ancient Force” but all easy to the ears.
On the other side, and despite its title, “Made Of Steel” is a power ballad with pianos and a nice atmospheres all over.
“Tales of Ancient Prophecies” is a fun, entertaining album from a genre that, whilst old-fashioned, still works when it’s delivered without pretentiousness.
Twilight Force wants to provide you an amusement moment, and they do it with fine songs, very good musicianship and production.
The only low point is the obvious, derivative cover art, but this sub-genre needs this type of things… I’m already in waiting for the next opus and if you are attracted by high profile, ‘adventure metal’ with catchy rhythms, this silver platter will do the job.
