COMING OF AGE – Eden Is Burning (2016)
We already presented at 0dayroxx the advanced single from “Eden Is Burning“, the debut album by Swedes COMING OF AGE. Now with the album officially released today, after listening the complete tracklist we can say this is a really solid first effort.
Hailing from Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, Coming Of Age was founded two years ago by young vocalist Rasmus Harnesk Wiklund with the aim to update to modern time the music he grew-up with: classic hard rock.
Through the nine tracks of “Eden Is Burning” (plus the great, atmospheric intro ‘Wrath Of Abbadon’) Coming Of Age show their influences under their sleeve: the edgy side of Skid Row, the rockier side of Europe, and a bit of heavy-glam recalling Hardcore Superstar.
However – especially guitarists Fredrik Bohman & Jens Tjärnström, have a sound & style quite in the vein of the new wave of Scandinavian Melodic Hard Rock. Think H.E.A.T or Talisman.
This results in a very nice mixture of pretty hard rockin’ songs yet with a highly melodic approach all over.
‘Rising From The Ashes’, title track ‘ Eden Is Burning’, the dark ‘Devil Inside’ (some modern day Europe on it) and ‘Angels & Devil’ are among the heavier tracks on the album, a disc with no ballads in sight.
‘Need Of Love’ is fueled by a monster groove akin Lynch Mob, then ‘Twisted Mind’ is perhaps the more melodic hard rock oriented track here with a Hardcore Superstar feel (Coming Of Age opened for them in a recent tour).
The band has the help of Blackwater’s drummer on ‘Karma’, one of the best compositions including a keyboard background all over and a strong chorus, and later on the kicking “Fallen Heroes”, where his distinctive drumming provide a different touch.
There is a band already in the scene which reminds me Coming Of Age’s sound: the also Swedish hard rockers Days Of Jupiter, and it’s not strange to see Magnus Larsson (Days Of Jupiter drummer) playing on ‘Snowman’, another of my picks from this album.
A deep-groovy hard rocker with gang vocals and a mysterious atmosphere close to ’80s Queensryche. Just listen the last part of the song.
Another really interesting band from Sweden arrives with Coming Of Age: their debut “Eden Is Burning” takes the band’s ’80s / ’90s influences plus their own dynamic modern sound to create a really solid and entertaining album.
Coming Of Age is quite hard and edgy, but always clean as arctic ice with melody driving their music.
Punchy & Good.
