BLUE OYSTER CULT – The Revolution By Night [remastered] (HDtracks 2016)
One of you asked for this underrated, highly melodic ’80s BLUE OYSTER CULT album “The Revolution By Night” recently appeared at HDtracks.com in a remastered form (Columbia / Legacy last remaster).
“The Revolution By Night”, released in 1983, was a sign of the times: a polished, melodic, almost radio-friendly album from Blue Öyster Cult, according to the sound of the era.
The album was intended to capitalize on the unexpected success of Blue Öyster Cult previous album just two years prior, and Columbia Records also asked for a sound similar to Journey which was at the top of Rock charts.
Hence the album’s blend straight-ahead melodic rock and a mix of AOR and pop elements.
Take note; renowned producer Bruce Fairbairn (Loverboy, Bon Jovi) is at the helm, and cult AOR musician Aldo Nova helped with songwriting and the overall ‘sound shape’.
Yes, this is bright, glossy record from Blue Öyster Cult, so if you are fan of the melodious side of rock, you better check this one.
“Shooting Shark” became a radio hit, and its accompanying video became one of the very early MTV’s most requested clips upon its release. The lyrics were based on a poem by written Patti Smith.
The song “Take Me Away”, co-written by vocalist Eric Bloom with Aldo Nova, also received significant airplay on AOR radio. A track with that ‘mysterious’ AOR atmosphere that only albums recorded in the first half of the ’80s were capable to capture. “Take Me Away” worth this album alone.
As you see, there was a Canadian team (Fairbairn / Aldo Nova) to make Blue Öyster Cult and “The Revolution By Night” to sound catchy & polished, pretty Canadian AOR sounding indeed.
The record was badly promoted by Columbia and the AOR / radio-friendly audience never noticed of this ‘new’ Blue Öyster Cult, while first time fans resulted disorientated with this ‘commercial sound’. The result: the LP sales were poor, a shame, because it’s a very good recording.
I know many of you – especially melodic rock aficionados – never heard “The Revolution By Night”. You could be extremely surprised by the quality on offer, even more with this superb remastered version.
