MOON DOG MANE (Frank Hannon) – Turn It Up! [rare promo CD]
As requested, here’s “Turn It Up!”, the only album released by MOON DOG MANE, the band formed by Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon when he left the band. This is the rare promo-only CD distributed to radio stations to test the water.
Two songs got strong airplay on US rock radio, so Hannon decided to release the album with different artwork and the title track peaked at No. 36 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, and “I Believe” peaked at No. 38.
“Turn It Up!” is a great collection of gritty, melodic radio-ready rock songs that not only feature Hannon’s famous guitar style, but also handling keyboards, producing, mixing and mastering.
This is a pretty killer hard rockin’ southern rock record with a timeless sound and very strong songwriting, with all the feeling and talent of Frank Hannon’s writing a good rock song.
Brodie Stewart’s show-stopping vocals really match the material on offer here, but also some exceptional contributions from their talented band mates: Lady Cortney DeAugustine (drums), Joel Kreuger (bass), Kevin Hampton (guitar) and Chris Martinez (keyboards).
“Turn It Up!” harkens back to the glory days of classic rock without setting up permanent residence there.
Title track reveals a jamming, infectious chorus in its statement that sometimes loud is not only better, but necessary. Stewart’s soulful, powerhouse vocals showcase the band’s bluesy edge and Martinez’ keyboards season each track with a fine honky-tonk rock flavor.
Other standout tracks include the funky “Turn the Page,” showcasing Hannon’s famous flair for bluesy guitar licks, and the down-home “Whatcha Gonna Do?” that would make any Skynyrd fan blush.
Moon Dog Mane’s songwriting style varies throughout the album, from the sing-along chorus in the inspirational “Let It Shine” to the rollicking “Can’t Stop Rockin’.”
And iif you need a great ballad, check out “Sweet Southern Sound”, a melodic tune that would not be out of the place into any Tesla album.
MOON DOG MANE and “Turn It Up!” resulted pretty successful with the band touring all over the States with the likes of Def Leppard and Cinderella, but disbanded after two years of existence due to Hannon’s pursue of a solo career.
