EPITAPH – Don’t Let The Gray Hair Fool You (2024)
Cult German classic rock / hard rockers EPITAPH celebrating their 55th band anniversary in 2024 with the release of a new studio album titled “Don’t Let The Gray Hair Fool You“. A funny title, but properly chosen, as these veterans really know how to rock.
Despite their ‘dark’ name, EPITAPH always has played a mix of heavy rock, hard and blues since formed in the early Seventies. They released a successful LP in 1972, later one single got airplay in the U.S. and were on the verge to break the American market with their 1974 record, unfortunately never materialized due to record label / manager troubles.
Perhaps EPITAPH doesn’t ring a bell for some of you, but for sure will the band leader / songwriter Cliff Jackson (Lead Vocals, Guitars) and Bernie ‘Bernd’ Kolbe (Bass) act they formed in the ’80s: melodic hard rockers DOMAIN, a really good band with punchy polished albums under their belt.
Well, for EPITAPH’s ”Don’t Let The Gray Hair Fool You” expect the same detailed production / seasoned musicianship, and a collection of timeless melodic classic rock tunes.
Sonic-wise ”Don’t Let The Gray Hair Fool You” has a Seventies / Eighties classic rock / melodic hard feeling, with clean vocals (Cliff Jackson pipes are intact), melodious guitar work and the well tried & tested multi-part choruses.
There are also occasional keyboards parts fluctuating between sophisticated AOR and classic rock organ – check ‘Cold Day Of Light’, ‘We Can Find A Way’, or the particularly strong midtempo ‘Highway Of Fear’.
In fact, EPITAPH overall feel is very British, the sound of these past glorious decades however with an updated production.
A welcomed new album from a classy sounding band, old-school but relevant both in songwriting and execution. “Don’t Let The Gray Hair Fool You” is only available on physical format.
